Some post offices employed unusual cancels hand carved
from cork or wood. Denver used a fancy, negative "M"
cancel briefly in 1875. The meaning of the initial is unknown
but is possibly the first letter of the last name of a postal
clerk. The postmaster of Denver at the time was Hiram P.
Bennett.
